Let Your Smile Rest: Why It’s Risky to Wear Your Dentures 24/7

When you dive into the world of dentures, you might be excited about having a full set of teeth again. You may feel more confident or have an easier time eating your favorite foods. After all, your restoration was designed for you specifically. That said, you may want to keep them in 24/7 to enjoy the benefits they brought you, but this isn’t the best idea. Here are three reasons you need to take them out at night to protect your oral health and grin.

1.)  Greater Chance of Gum Disease

Just like natural teeth, you should clean your dentures twice daily. You will need to brush them to remove plaque and debris from all sides. That includes the base that sits against your gums. If not, then you risk developing periodontal disease, which can cause discomfort and an ill-fitting restoration.

Not only that, but the snug fit of your prosthetic can reduce circulation to these soft tissues. This isn’t typically an issue when you remove it during the night, but if you don’t, then you may inadvertently prevent essential vitamins and minerals from being delivered.

2.)  Increased Risk of Denture Stomatitis

Building off the point above, bacterial buildup can turn into denture stomatitis if you don’t clean it off in time. This condition is a type of thrush that can be painful and cause noticeable redness, inflammation, and a burning sensation. Your immune system will be weakened as well, so you will have a harder time fighting off infection, especially ones in your mouth. Simply take out your prosthetic to give it the proper cleaning it deserves.

3.)  Higher Jawbone Loss

If you are missing teeth, then your jawbone will start to weaken. This happens as the bone isn’t getting the stimulation it used to from your tooth roots. Your body will reallocate the minerals in it to other places that also need them.

Thankfully, dentures help slow this natural process. They will apply pressure when you bite and chew on your gums, and it’s sent downward. That said, the opposite can happen by wearing them constantly. The friction can lead to further jawbone loss, which can cause slippage and discomfort.

In the end, don’t forget to take out your dentures during the night and soak them. This simple habit will help you keep your oral health strong and your prosthetic in great shape; that way, you enjoy it for years to come.
