Gum recontouring can be an excellent cosmetic option for people with gummy smiles. Nevertheless, your mouth will still need time to heal after the procedure, and it’s important that you take whatever steps you can to protect your gums during this time. Below is a brief overview of what you can generally expect during the recovery process following your gum recontouring and what you can do to take care of your mouth.

Recovery Time

First of all, it’s important to remember that the amount of time it takes your mouth to heal after gum recontouring depends on how extensive the treatment was. If only a small amount of tissue had to be taken out, you’ll likely make a full recovery in just a few days. On the other hand, if large amounts of tissue were removed, your mouth may need up to a month to heal completely.

Pain Management

While using a soft tissue laser to perform gum recontouring can reduce the discomfort you experience during and after the procedure, you may still notice some swelling and tenderness in the treated area. Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen can help you stay comfortable while your gums are healing. However, you should avoid using aspirin, as doing so could lead to bleeding.

Any discomfort should fade over time. If it seems like your pain is getting worse or is lasting longer than expected, you should call your dentist immediately to see what they recommend.

Physical Activity

You should try to limit any strenuous physical activity such as running or lifting weights for at least the first few days after gum recontouring. The more time you spend resting, the less time it will take for your body to heal.

Diet

While your gums are recovering, you should stay away from spicy and crunchy foods, as they could potentially slow down the healing process. Additionally, you should avoid strawberries, kiwis, and any other kind of food with small seeds that might get stuck under your gums.

Ideally, your diet for at least the first three to five days after your treatment should consist of soft foods. Cheese, pasta, yogurt, eggs, and cooked vegetables are all good options.

Oral Hygiene

You may still brush and floss during the recovery process. Be very gentle when brushing around the area where gum recontouring was performed. You can also keep your mouth clean by rinsing with a salt water solution after every meal.

Bear in mind that every patient is different. Your dentist may give you additional aftercare instructions depending on your needs. Take care to follow said instructions carefully; by making sure that the recovery process after gum recontouring goes as smoothly as possible, you’ll be able to enjoy your new smile that much sooner.
