These tooth-colored shells can cover up multiple dental flaws simultaneously, such as cracks, stains, and even mild misalignment. While they’re one of the more advanced cosmetic treatments in dentistry today, you may be surprised to know that they’ve been around since the 1920s. Read on to learn about the history of veneers and how they’ve evolved over the years.

Inventing of Veneers

Did you know that it was the film industry that first came up with the idea of dental veneers? In 1928, a California dentist named Dr. Charlie Pincus invented this tooth-colored layer which was designed to enhance the look of his client’s smiles so that they could be picture-perfect for the cameras. While these were helpful for many actors, these shells weren’t designed to be permanent like the ones made today. They were merely attached to a person’s teeth via special adhesive and could only be worn temporarily.

Developing the Etching Technique

Although Hollywood and film were the main reason veneers were created, there became an increase of interest from people who weren’t working in the industry. Nearly everyone who could afford the treatment wanted their dream smile as well. The only problem was that the veneers weren’t a long-lasting solution for dental issues at the time. However, in 1959, Dr. Michael Buonocore developed the etching technique, which involved applying acid on the surface of teeth to form tiny grooves. This made it much simpler to fuse with dental restorations.

Later, in 1982, R.J. Simonsen and J.R. Calamia used the previous research to develop a more permanent veneer. This was done by using hydrofluoric acid on the teeth, which created microscopic pores for dental compounds to trickle into, creating a stronger bond with veneers. This is what would finally allow patients to enjoy their brand-new pearly whites for many years.

Today’s Porcelain Veneers

In modern dentistry, cosmetic dentists practice a similar etching and bonding technique. The biggest difference is that the veneer process utilizes top-quality and highly stain-resistant porcelain material that is both durable and closely mimics natural teeth. In many cases, veneers can last 15 years or more with proper care before needing to be replaced.

If you’re interested in achieving your dream smile, you might consider veneers as the ideal option. With their track record and advancements over the years, you can be sure to appreciate beautiful, effective, and long-lasting results!

About the Author

Dr. Priya Chougule earned her dental doctorate at the University of Connecticut.
